Am I still getting the same quality of therapy?
Yes, you are! Telehealth is as effective as in-office therapy. It has been even more effective for some clients than traditional office therapy. Why would it be more effective, you may ask? The clients have told me that because they are in the comfort of their homes, they can be more relaxed and speak more freely. Also, seeing a therapist on the screen feels less intimidating than in person.
Is virtual trauma therapy as effective?
In my experience, virtual trauma therapy is as effective as trauma therapy in the office. EMDR Therapy, Brainspotting, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy all work well via Telehealth. I use a special program that has been designed to provide visual and auditory bilateral stimulation. Tactile stimulation can be provided via bi-tapps if the client owns the device.
What are the benefits of Telehealth?
You can be anywhere in Minnesota and receive therapy. You can save time on the commute and being stuck in traffic. You don’t have to dress up. You can receive quality care from the comfort of your home. You can save money on gas and other car expenses. You will have more privacy as you will never encounter another client in the waiting area. Telehealth can help you get access to therapy without spreading or contracting COVID-19. You don’t have to drive in bad weather.
How well can you get to know a therapist you have never met face to face?
The same principles work in Telehealth therapy as in-office. You can ask me any questions at any time. The main focus, of course, will be on you as a client because you are coming to therapy to address a specific concern.
What about my privacy? Are my virtual visits safe and confidential?
Yes, your virtual Telehealth visits are safe and confidential. I use the Simple Practice platform for Telehealth. It is a HIPAA-compliant Telehealth platform. Your information is kept safe with end-to-end encryption and bank-level security. You must also ensure safety and confidentiality by choosing a private location for your sessions and using a secure internet connection.
How are technical difficulties dealt with? What if I am not tech-savvy?
Simple Practice is a reliable Telehealth platform. If we encounter an occasional glitch, we will use a backup platform or resort to a phone call. You don’t have to be tech-savvy. However, you will need a reliable internet connection and a laptop, desktop, or iPad. A laptop or desktop is preferred due to a larger screen size, allowing for wider eye movements for EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy.
